What I'm doing now...

Like many people in the Industry, 2020 proved to be a pretty disastrous year for the events industry. I was made redundant in June, and had to adjust my focus accordingly. For me it was time to kick back a little bit, spend some time with my family, and re-look at what I want to do for the next step of my career. In order to facilitate this pause in my permanent career path, I am currently freelancing, and have been fortunate enough to have been kept reasonably busy for the past couple of months as events are slowly starting to return to Dubai.

I want to take my time to find the right role, so please get in touch if you feel that we could work together. I am open to a shift to consultancy, or client side, as well as supplier side roles in both the temporary events and more permanent museum sectors. In the meantime, if you need an extremely capable project manager, senior project manager, project director, or production guru on a freelance basis, then I am just a phone-call away, and would love to talk.

What I've done...

I have been a Senior Project Manager, and subsequently Head of Project Management for Projex Event services for the past 8 years. During this time I have worked on many exciting projects ranging from large scale government conferences, cultural events, museums and exhibition stands. I cannot share the photos of these online, but please get in touch, and we can meet to talk through my portfolio.

What gets me excited most is when I work with designers who are not interested in doing what has been done before and want to push the boundaries in terms of materials, techniques and structure to create truly engaging and immersive 3D environments. I love to R&D new methodologies and have a firm belief that if I cant work out how to build it, then it probably cant be done. I also understand and balance carefully along the fine line of allowing designers to explore their creativity, and aligning projects with their budgetary and practical constraints.

I am driven, passionate, and have never missed a deadline. I work effectively in highly pressurized situations, managing diverse teams in a global market towards a common goal. I can build a team for your project, or fit in seamlessly with any existing team. I get my hands dirty, one minute you'll find me on my knees with the men explaining exactly how things should be fitted perfectly, and the next I'll be with the client managing their concerns and expectations.

I'm creative, and a great  problem solver. Projects rarely run 100% to plan, and its my ability to spot issues early, and to adapt to new circumstances that has allowed me to successfully deliver the projects that l have led. I can use SketchUp and many times have been sat with the client late at night working something new up that needs to be built to solve a particular problem.

Museum of the Future - 2014-2019

It has been my pleasure to deliver the scenic environment for the Museum of Future at the Government Summit every year since it's inception in 2014. During this time, I have worked with some great futurists from across the globe such as TellArt, 3Monkeys & Gallerjia 12, and every time have been tasked with developing and producing the environment. Being the future museum, something that has been done before is never good enough, so the concept is always challenging and the timeline is always a few days too short. Every installation I have worked on has been a great experience where the technology, audio visual and set building teams have come together and produced stunning results.

Live Events - 2012-2020

I love live events... They're often big fluid projects that rely on the production lead to think on his feet, revise the plan, and keep a calm head. I've worked on many projects for Publicis Live such as The Arab Strategy Forum, AMUG and World Free Zones, and many events for DCT (below). The scale of these events calls for multiple teams building consecutively, and a strong grasp of the timeline and the clients expectations. My organization, attention to detail skills, as well as an ability to work alongside many diverse teams of suppliers are where I have excelled in these types of project.

Work with DCT -  2014-2020

Over the years, I have led Projex's work with the Abu Dhabi Culture and Tourism Authority. This has included building Abu Dhabi Art for the past 6 years, leading the production team for the museum at the Outer Palace of Qasr Al Hosn, many art galleries and small museum spaces such as the basement at the Al Qattara arts centre.

Abu Dhabi Art is a huge public art event with commercial gallery spaces, art exhibits, outdoor structures and public events, all built from scratch and installed over a 3 week period. Often I would be running a team of over 80 carpenters, painters, electricians, graphics installers and support staff to bring the event to life.

SAASCC Museum - Kuwait - 2016-2018

The Sheikh Abdullah Al Salam Cultural Centre in Kuwait is where I really developed my Museum production skills. Over an 18 month period, I oversaw the design development, R&D and prototyping, production and installation of 4 Galleries at the Museum. The design concepts were given to us, but it was my role to make them work, make them robust enough to survive inquisitive hands and finish them to the highest level. It was an immersive project to work on, and really pushed my limits in terms of materials and techniques to get the right result. The museum opened in 2018, and when I visited recently, my galleries are looking as good as they did when I handed them over.

Hermes - 2019-2020

Hermes are one of those clients, where you can never predict the next challenge they will set you. Over the past 12 months, I have delivered multiple projects which really stretched my production skills to the limit. From producing a dinner event themed around a 1980's municipal swimming pool (with a tiled swimming pool dinner table for 24 people), to recreating on a large scale different textured and toned paint finishes originally created in a Parisian artists studio, they never accept second best, and demand the highest level of finish. I've made pineapples from gold tinted, chrome plated fiberglass pyramids, and produced launch parties which were a pink tinsel and  glitter ball delight. Always interesting and a great team to work with.

Exhibition Stands - 2012-2020

Over the past few years, I have worked less on exhibition stands, and more on Live Events and permanent installations. That said, I have built many stands over the years both in Dubai and globally. I've built 1000 sqm double decker stands, stands at cityscape which represented a new mall project (complete with marble floor and palm trees), outdoor pavilions, and small artists galleries. Installation time is always the issue and planning is always the answer. I've planned and executed many projects that have required 12 hours shift rotations to get the job done. I have completed projects for Mubadala, Emirates Airlines, Dolphin Energy, Dubai Holding and others.
